The Quintessence of Tonkin – Vietnam takes the Stage

The grandest and most ambitious live entertainment project Vietnam has ever witnessed – The Quintessence of Tonkin – has opened its doors to welcome visitors from across the globe.

Located 25km west of central Hanoi, The Quintessence of Tonkin unique stage lies within Baara Land, a brand-new entertainment and cultural complex situated at the foot of Thay mountain -  one of the oldest National Heritage Sites in Vietnam and a pilgrimage site during the Lunar New Year festival season. The spectacle draws inspiration from Chua Thay Pagoda’s spiritual history, with a storyline that focus on the founding of the pagoda by the venerable monk Tu Dao Hanh and the ancient union between religion and monarchy.

The stage was built in between the auditorium and the small hill where Chua Thay rests, so the audience watches the performance to the backdrop of the mountain. The pagoda thus plays a vital role in the spectacle. The stage is permanently submerged under a thin layer of water that allows for many of Vietnam’s more striking cultural treasures to be creatively displayed, and has a surface area of about 4300 square meters.

With more than 180 performers, most of whom are local villagers from the region, The Quintessence of Tonkin highlights compelling elements of Vietnamese culture but present them in contemporary and innovative ways. The spectacle will also blend different elements of traditional music styles, including “Quan họ” and “Ca Trù”, both of which are now recognized by UNESCO as examples of intangible world heritage. Folk singing, folk games, Mother Goddesses worship and daily life of farmers, are also showcased in the performance.

The spectacle which lasts approximately 60 minutes can be best thought of as a mosaic of Vietnamese culture, taking the most compelling elements and weaving them into a performance masterpiece.

The show has been many years in the making, and is certain to be considered one of the highlights of a trip to Vietnam. The performance also brings historical and cultural knowledge to the audiences while entertaining, and is a must–see cultural spectacle for international travelers in Vietnam.
